Roof Issues Common During The Winter Months

Posted on: 31 December 2018

A residential roof is under a lot of stress year round, but the winter months can be particularly problematic. Rain, ice, snow, and wind can all take their toll on a roof, so if you are a homeowner, it is important to pay close attention to your roof during the winter months and make repairs promptly to help prevent extensive damage that can be quite costly to have fixed when spring arrives. Continue reading to learn more about common roof problems that are more likely to occur during the winter months:

Buildup of Condensation

Prior to extremely low temperatures or winter storms, it is a good idea to have your attic inspected to have the insulation and ventilation checked out. A common problem that people encounter in the winter months is a buildup of condensation in the attic area. This occurs when the warm air inside your home rises into the attic and encounters the cold surface of the roof. When condensation builds up, it can damage insulation and roofing material, as well as lead to the growth of mold and mildew. The best way to prevent a buildup of condensation is buy ensuring that your attic is well-ventilated and is properly insulated.

Ice Dams

Ice damns are the result of water and snow melting and refreezing. What usually happens is ice or snow on the upper part of the roof begins to melt before the ice or snow on the perimeter of the roof line. When the water from the melting ice or snow flows down to the roof line and refreezes, ice dams form. Ice dams are a problem because they put a lot of stress on the roofline, and they can also cause the roof to begin leaking as the water trapped behind the ice dam pools and damages the roofing material. One way to help prevent ice dams is by being diligent about removing ice and snow from your roof regularly. It is also important to ensure that your gutters remain clear so water can be diverted from the roof.

Missing Shingles

Winter storms can bring very strong winds which can rip off shingles from the roof. After a winter storm in your area, it is always a good idea to do a visual inspection of your roof to determine if any damage occurred. In the event that wind from a winter storm removed shingles, have the damaged areas repaired right away by a company such as Berwald Roofing Inc in order to prevent leaks or extensive damage to the surface of the roof.
